How 1 Plastic Life Transforms Everyday Plastics Into New, Useful Products

11/27/2025

At 1 Plastic Life, recycling is more than sorting bottles — it’s about transforming overlooked materials into purpose. While CRV bottles are collected and processed through state-certified recycling centers, our plastic creations come from a different category of plastics altogether.
These include everyday items such as:
  • Yogurt and sour cream containers
  • To-go clamshells
  • Plastic cups
  • Spoons and forks
  • Microwaveable containers
  • Other types of food-grade plastics that are often thrown away
These materials, commonly made from #5 polypropylene (PP) plastics, perfect for shredding, melting, and reshaping into new items.

From Daily Waste to Durable Products Once collected, these plastics are taken to our community processing sites. Here, unhoused and unemployed individuals participate in paid job-training, learning how to:
  • Clean and sort food-grade plastics
  • Identify plastic types using simple tools
  • Shred the materials into small flakes
  • Operate injection molding and extrusion machines
  • Safely produce new items from recycled plastic
When the shredded plastic is heated and melted, it becomes a workable material that can be molded into:
  • Keychains
  • Clips
  • Carabiners
  • Small tools
  • Art pieces
  • Custom items for school fundraising
Every piece becomes proof that waste can be transformed into something with value and purpose.

Why This Work Matters Recycling food-grade plastics this way has a big environmental and social impact:
Environmental Impact
  • Keeps plastics that are rarely recycled out of landfills
  • Reduces pollution in low-income communities
  • Shows students how recycling can create real-world solutions
Social Impact
  • Provides paid job training to unhoused individuals
  • Offers a safe and structured workspace
  • Builds hands-on skills that translate into future employment
  • Helps participants regain confidence and stability
Educational Impact
  • Students see the full lifecycle of plastic
  • Schools experience the benefits of sustainability in action
  • Young people learn that recycling can spark creativity and innovation

Turning Waste Into Opportunity Every shredded clamshell, every repurposed spoon, and every melted yogurt cup is more than plastic — it’s a job opportunity, a teaching moment, and a chance to reduce waste in Los Angeles.
